Sports is a Metaphor for Life – so GO PRO!

leave-it-all-on-the-fieldFor me, it’s been a summer of watching Little League baseball. In the long hours in the stands, I am reminded how sports is a metaphor for life.

My son’s team practiced twice daily in their quest for the Little League State Championship, with an eye on the ultimate goal: a chance to play in the Little League World Series. It was a great run, but unfortunately they ended as runners-up and didn’t win the state title.

The experience was a great reminder that participating in sports provides valuable life lessons that aren’t limited to children or even professional athletes. It’s as much about determination and grit as it is about athletic ability, and the mental part of the game is often more important than physical prowess.

When you’re trying to get your body in better physical condition, staying the course and making a commitment to an exercise program can be as difficult as winning a state championship. And it’s not just during training that you have to keep on track; it also involves related activities, such as getting enough sleep and eating properly. You may seek the assistance of a coach or a trainer, but ultimately it’s your own devotion to the task at hand that determines the outcome.

And by outcome, I don’t just mean your cardiovascular and muscular fitness. Like the elusive state championship, all of your hard work cannot guarantee fertility success and a pregnancy. And yet, even without the guarantee, turning your physical and mental health around is already your first success.

Here are a few of my favorite inspirational quotes from the world of sports to help you get moving:

“It’s not whether you get knocked down; it’s whether you get up.”~ Vince Lombardi, professional football player, coach, and executive

“Persistence can change failure into extraordinary achievement.”~ Matt Biondi, Olympic champion swimmer

“What you lack in talent can be made up with desire, hustle, and giving 110 percent all the time.”~ Don Zimmer, professional baseball player, manager, coach, and executive

“Set your goals high, and don’t stop till you get there.”~ Bo Jackson, professional baseball and football player

“Make sure your worst enemy doesn’t live between your own two ears.”~ Laird Hamilton, Big Wave pro surfer

“You find that you have peace of mind and can enjoy yourself, get more sleep, and rest when you know that it was a one hundred percent effort that you gave – win or lose.”~ Gordie Howe, professional hockey player

“Win If You Can, Lose If You Must, But NEVER QUIT!”~ Cameron Trammell, professional golfer

“You have to believe in yourself when no one else does – that makes you a winner right there. ”~ Venus Williams, professional tennis player
